10 reasons for the carnival in Venice

While Venice, the fairytale city on the Adriatic Sea, offers its visitors plenty of beauty at any time of the year, Carnival time is a different story. Dating back to the 12th century, the carnival is famous around the world, with participants in colorful costumes and the famous Venetian masks surrounding the venue.

It is believed that the first Venetian carnival took place in 1162 to celebrate the victory over the Patriarch of Aquileia. Later, the celebrations from late December to Easter became a tradition. Meat is not eaten at Easter, and the word carnival actually comes from the Latin word "carne vale," meaning farewell to meat.

The Venice Carnival takes place from February 12th to March 1st, 2022. So why should you go to this world famous carnival? Let's look at the answer to this question with you as Tourwix Travel.

1-Venice has always been a party city

In the early 18th century, Venice became a tourist destination. Entertainment, casinos and carnivals filled the city with people. This party atmosphere can also be found in the paintings by Pietro Longhi and Gabriele Bella. These paintings, which bear witness to the city's interesting past, can be seen in the Querini Stampalia and Ca'Rezzonico museums.

2-You can visit Casanova prison in Venice

Casanova, the most famous playboy of all time, left an important mark in Venice. This charismatic gentleman who loves lust and debauchery was imprisoned for some time and his cell can still be visited.

3-You can find traces of Istanbul

In 828, two merchants stole the relics of St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice, from Alexandria and buried him in the basilica named after the saint, which adjoins and is connected to the Doge's Palace. In the name of the saint, the facade of the building where he was buried was decorated with Roman statues, columns and bronze statues of horses from Istanbul. Today, St. Mark's Basilica is one of the most popular sights in Venice.

4- You can learn the history of Venetian masks

Venetian masks are as old as carnival. This entertainment at these times of the year brought people from different walks of life together. Friendships could be made without disclosing people's identities and differences. In the 18th century the famous Venetian mask was so often used by women in the entertainment industry to hide their identity. That's why wearing this mask outside of carnival was forbidden. Traditional masks are still made and sold today. Ca' Macanà stands out among the places where you can find them.

5- You can complete your carnival mask with a stylish cape

If you want to mingle with the mysterious crowd at the carnival and buy a mask, you should combine it with a stylish cape called "tabarro". If you want a traditional Venetian cape, you can visit Monica Daniele, a designer boutique in San Marco.

6-You can attend Venetian balls

Venice is one of the few most popular romantic destinations in the world. Carnival balls are the pinnacle of romance. You can attend proms and one of the dance parties for fun. Tickets for these nights in the historical palace are not cheap, but the experience is worth it. One of the greatest romantic gestures in the world took place in Venice in the 1840s. The Russian Prince Trubetskoy gave the Italian ballerina Marie Taglioni a palace on the Grand Canal in Venice: Palazzo Gioro. Today it serves as an art museum. Visiting the museum you can see the unique architecture of the works and buildings that are the subject of this romantic gesture.

8- 200 Years of Silence in Venice

When Napoleon took control of Venice in 1797, he banned dress and entertainment. There has actually been no carnival for almost 200 years. In 1979 it was decided to resume the celebrations as it would revitalize the tourism sector. There is no question that the carnival has been a huge success in city tourism ever since. One of the best things to do in Venice is to see a show at the city's magnificent Opera House, which burned down three times and was restored in 2004. Although they remain tourist icons to this day, they continue to offer colorful and fun trips. You can learn to drive a gondola by attending a short course organized for visitors to Venice. If you don't like gondolas, you can take the "Vaporetto" water bus and take a walk on the Grand Canal, which is very pleasant.
