It was one of the first cities to join the Reformation and introduce a Protestant church ordinance. During the Thirty Years' War, the city faced several sieges and plundering but managed to maintain its independence. In 1802, Reutlingen was annexed to Württemberg, losing its Free Imperial City status. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city experienced economic prosperity and a substantial population increase. Reutlingen was declared a major city in 1989 and currently has a population of around 117,000.
